To enlist Indian support in the war efforts, the British sent Sir Strafford Cripps to India in 1942.
He proposed that a constitution of India shall be framed by the people of India which shall
provide Dominion Status to India on the pattern of Canada and Australia in the British
Commonwealth.
Although it talked about a single constitution for whole of India, it offered that if these proposals
were not acceptable to any community then they could discuss it separately with the crown.
Indirectly, it was a hint to the Muslim League for a separate Pakistan.
However, Cripps proposals were to take effect only after the war was over.
Gandhi rejected it by calling it ‘a post-dated cheque that can't be encashed on a crashing bank’.
Muslim League also rejected it because it did not provide clearly for a separate Pakistan.
